KidsCom Climate Change Message Board: Speak Out!

In the news - February 18, 2009

The German government wants to try to combat global warming by ''fertilizing'' part of the ocean with iron to create an algae bloom so large that it absorbs excess CO2 from the air and takes it into the ocean bottom when the bloom dies and sinks. Other organizations say that much algae could cause large oxygen-free ''dead zones'' in the ocean where fish couldn't live. Do you think causing a giant algae bloom is a good way to combat global warming? Why or why not?
Other kids have said:

no becaause we need fish life more than we need algae life but then again losing algae life could be losing another part of the life cycle to provide life soo its a win or lose situation.

- Tagan - Age: 12 - From SOUTH AFRICA

No because that would be good for the enviroment but not for nature. I think it is a really bad idea for that reason. No.
- Chu chi - Age: 11 - From UNITED KINGDOM

I think that it is agast the law and our nature for the habit will be ruined and we may not have any more inverment and no more wales could swim.
- Yanja - Age: 7 - From MALAWI

Yes and no, because the algae would cover the ocean, vastly reducing its oxygen levels, but the algae would suck up the co2. I think they should put the algae bloom in an area of water that has the lowest amount of life, to make sure that not too many sea animals die.
- Ollie - Age: 10 - From UNITED KINGDOM

no wrong! totaly wrong not right!
- Leona - Age: 10 - From UNITED STATES OF AMERICA (USA)

i think no because we need to help the fish survive and feed them also,we need to stop throwing trash on the streets because that trash goes to the ocean and it get on the otters and otters start to die
- Elina - Age: 13 - From UNITED STATES OF AMERICA (USA)

No, because fish could not live in some parts of the ocean.
- Alison - Age: 12 - From UNITED STATES OF AMERICA (USA)
